Set your team apart: The rising value of soft skills

In a recent analysis of 70 million job changes across more than 1,000 occupations, researchers found that employees with strong foundational skills—like collaboration, adaptability and problem-solving—consistently outperformed those with only highly specialized technical skills. As technology continues to reshape the workplace, it’s these human skills that can set teams apart, allowing employees to learn faster, navigate change more effectively and add value beyond a single role. Sometimes called “soft skills,” these foundational abilities are becoming increasingly important. For organizations facing rapid change, soft skills can be a critical differentiator and key driver of long-term performance.

What are soft skills?

Soft skills—often referred to as human or foundational skills—are the abilities that shape how people work, communicate and adapt. They stand in contrast to technical skills, which are tied to specific tools or tasks. Soft skills, including collaboration, communication, adaptability, critical thinking and problem-solving, are also transferable across roles and industries. Other valuable soft skills include emotional intelligence (EQ), cultural awareness, conflict resolution and time management.

While sometimes seen as “nice to have” traits, soft skills are critical for leadership and teamwork. In today’s ever-evolving workplace, they’re what enable individuals and teams to turn expertise into real, meaningful impact. Show the importance of soft skills by recognizing great acts of teamwork or problem-solving. Each month, solicit nominations and select a “People’s Person” award. Give branded items, like baseball caps and lunch coolers, to show appreciation.

Why soft skills matter now more than ever

Soft skills directly influence how teams adapt, collaborate and perform—especially in complex, fast-moving workplaces and industries. While technical expertise enables people to complete tasks, soft skills determine how effectively that expertise is applied. These skills also help teams navigate change, stay aligned and solve new problems as they arise.

The importance of these human skills is growing as the shelf life of technical skills shrinks. A LinkedIn® report revealed that seven of the top 10 “skills on the rise” are soft skills. As automation and AI are directed toward routine work, organizations rely on people to lead through uncertainty, exercise strong judgment and translate insights into action. At the same time, remote and hybrid work often require stronger people skills than ever before. Together, these shifts have made soft skills not just valuable—but essential—for long-term organizational resilience and performance.

How to build soft skills on your teams

How leaders show up and how work gets done impact the building of soft skills. Model strong communication, curiosity and adaptability by being transparent, actively listening and welcoming input before making decisions.

Help teams grow in these areas by letting them tackle real problems together, rather than working in silos or following past procedures. Open discussions and regular feedback can strengthen collaboration and critical thinking. It’s also important to recognize and reward behaviors—not just results. Launch a peer recognition program, where employees share the contributions of their colleagues. Each quarter, draw entries at random and award prizes. Give winners travel mugs, long-sleeve shirts or outdoor speakers. Over time, these everyday experiences turn soft skills into habits that shape how teams respond to change, learn together and work effectively.

Consider soft skills in hiring too. Use behavioral interviewing to learn how candidates have handled real situations, revealing communication, adaptability, teamwork and problem-solving more effectively than standard questioning. Ask for examples of situations where they resolved conflict, learned under pressure or supported a team through change. Prioritize soft skills in hiring as well as development to bring in employees who already demonstrate key behaviors—then help them grow once on board.

The soft skills advantage

Investing in soft skill development turns everyday interactions into opportunities for growth. By fostering collaboration, adaptability and problem-solving, organizations create teams that thrive—building resilience, driving innovation and standing out in a rapidly changing professional landscape.
